Australian Capital Territory
The ACT Australia’s smallest state and is completed
surrounded by New South Wales. It is home to Australia’s capital city Canberra.
After Australia became a nation in 1901 a capital city needed to be established,
but there was rivalry between the two largest cities, Melbourne and Sydney, with
neither city wanting the other to become the capital. In 1908 a site was
selected between the two cities as the site for Australia’s capital city,
Canberra, to be built.
Canberra is a planned city, designed by American architect Walter Burley Griffin.
In planning the city Burley Griffin used geometric shapes such as circles and triangles, with Parliament House as a central feature of the city on Capital Hill. Lake Burley Griffin is also a feature of the city. The lake and surrounding parklands are a popular recreation area.
