New South Wales

Picture

New South Wales encompasses everything from complete sophistication on the streets of Sydney, to the remote serenity or Dubbo.  You can enjoy a coffee in Sydney’s cosmopolitan Double Bay one morning and a billy tea on the banks of the Darling River the next.  New South Wales is home to Australia’s largest city, Sydney, and this state offers great diversity, ranging from the snow-covered peaks of the Snowy Mountains to tropical rainforests.

In addition to this the coast of New South Wales is strung with beaches teeming with people.  If you head inland you will see the magnificent Great Dividing Range, beyond which are the vast wheat plains.  Further out is semi-desert, with beacons like the Wall of China, in Mungo National Park, or the placid, tranquil Lake Cawndilla in Kinchega National Park where explorers Burke and Wills had their last taste of ‘civilised’ living.

New South Wales is over 800,000 square kilometres in area, representing just over 10 per cent of the total landmass of Australia.  This state has a vast array of roads that offer easy access to the myriad of attractions.  The coastal highway runs from Timbilica in the south to Tweed Heads in the north, with the Pacific highway running north out of Sydney, and the Princes Highway running south toward Melbourne.
