Strathgordon / Gordon River Dam
Strathgordon is a wild rugged landscape, dotted with lakes and jagged peaks, and covered in dense unforgiving Tasmanian forest. It boast incredible scenery and challenging treks. The centrepiece of this area is Lack Gordon which was created from the Gordon River by constructing a 140 m high dam across the river above its intersection with the Serpentine River. Water from the lakes is used in the underground Hydroelectric Gordon Power Station, located near the Gordon Dam.
The Dam is several metres higher than the Sydney Harbour Bridge (134m), and holds back thirty times the amount of water in the Harbour itself. There are a number of tourism operations providing the chance to abseil down this dominating wall, trek through the rugged terrain and battle the elements on canoes.
